Aldi's New Chinese Takeaway Range: A Review
I recently tried Aldi's new Chinese takeaway range, and while I was initially excited, my enthusiasm quickly waned. The range includes crispy wontons, spring rolls, crispy lemon chicken, and sweet and sour dishes, among others. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that only one item truly stands out as worth buying.
The starters, such as the chicken bao buns and vegetable wontons, received mixed reviews. The buns were described as salty and dry, while the wontons were deemed adequately filled but with a hard top. The vegetable spring rolls were criticized for their greasy texture and lack of flavor. The tempura king prawns, on the other hand, were praised for their tasty batter, but the prawns were considered too small and in need of a sauce.
The main dishes, like the crispy lemon chicken and crispy sweet and sour, were also hit or miss. The lemon chicken was described as greasy but with a sharp, tangy sauce, earning it a solid seven out of ten. The sweet and sour dish, however, suffered from soggy battered chicken and an insufficient amount of sauce.
The crispy shredded beef and cashew chicken were not well-received. The shredded beef was criticized for its small portion size and the sauce's ability to ruin the dish. The cashew chicken was deemed soggy and lacking in flavor despite its generous cashew content.
The drunken noodles, Chinese-style curry, and beef and black bean dishes were particularly disappointing. The noodles were described as bitter and unpleasant, the curry lacked sauce and had an overwhelming coconut and almond flavor, and the beef and black bean dish featured cheap, chewy meat and a bitter, soy-like sauce.
The only item that truly shone was the Singapore noodles. The reviewer praised its generous portion size, lovely curry flavor, and well-seasoned chicken with a satisfying bite. It received an impressive eight out of ten rating.
In conclusion, while Aldi's Chinese takeaway range offers some decent options, it is far from perfect. The high prices and mixed quality make it a risky choice. If you're looking for a Chinese takeaway, it might be better to opt for a more established restaurant or a reputable delivery service.
