Cheatin' - A Hilarious Texas Comedy at Mansfield Playhouse (2026)

In the world of theater, every story has a beginning, and for Kanashay Grayeagle, that beginning is a journey worth exploring. From her early days at the Mansfield Playhouse, following the artistic director with a clipboard in hand, to her directorial debut with the Second Stage comedy 'Cheatin',' Grayeagle's path is a testament to the power of theater and the unexpected turns it can take.

'Cheatin',' a fast-paced and touching comedy, is set in the heart of west Texas, where gossip reigns supreme. The story unfolds with a blaze of infidelity, bringing to life a zany cast of characters that could rival any Feydeau farce. From the dim-witted mailman, Bo Bob, to the local stud, Clarence, and the faithful beautician, Sara Lee Turnover, each character adds a layer of authenticity and humor to the Texas-sized tale.

The Director's Journey

Grayeagle's directorial debut is a significant milestone, one that she never anticipated. "I never saw myself directing," she admits with a laugh. But as she reflects on her journey, she realizes that her experience in theater has been a gradual build-up to this moment. "It's a lot, it's everything I've done, and bringing it all together," she says, highlighting the challenges and rewards of stepping into the director's chair.

One of the key aspects of directing is casting, and Grayeagle's approach is both intuitive and strategic. She observes how Doug Wertz, the artistic director, seems to have an innate ability to choose the right actors for the right roles. "He just knows who to put in his shows," she notes. For Grayeagle, the casting process is a delicate dance, where sometimes the right actor walks through the door, and sometimes it's a matter of seeing the character come to life in her mind's eye.

Creating a Family on Stage

As Grayeagle assembled her cast, ranging in age from 21 to 75, she focused on creating a family-like environment. "I let them know at the beginning, we have to be close. The show's called 'Cheatin',' you have to be friends, you have to be family," she explains. This approach paid off, as the cast bonded, creating a sense of camaraderie that Grayeagle believes will shine through to the audience.

One of the cast members, David Kitzler, a long-time local attorney and magistrate, praises Grayeagle's instinct for theater. "She has a great instinct for theater. The nights when you feel you can't do anymore, she gets you up with her enthusiasm," he says. Kitzler, who is making a return to the stage after nearly a decade, was surprised to learn that Grayeagle was a first-time director. "Only because she told us. Otherwise, I wouldn't have spotted that," he adds.

A New Chapter for All

'Cheatin'' marks a new chapter not only for Grayeagle but also for several cast members. Mia Huttleston, who plays Maybelline Cartwright, a waitress with a desire for love, moved back to Shiloh from Washington to care for her ill father. For Huttleston, the play is a way to find community and a chance to step into the world of theater. She praises Grayeagle's guidance and the opportunity to learn about set design and the behind-the-scenes workings of a theater production.

Huttleston's character, Maybelline, is a complex role, one that requires her to balance her character's insight and feistiness. "She's really insightful. I don't think a lot of people give her credit right off the bat. She's the town gossip, but she also knows what to do with the information and gives great advice," Huttleston explains.

A Deeper Look

'Cheatin'' is more than just a comedy; it's a showcase of the power of theater to bring people together and create a sense of community. It's a story of infidelity, but it's also a story of friendship, family, and the unexpected bonds that can form on stage. As Grayeagle's directorial debut unfolds, it serves as a reminder that sometimes the most rewarding journeys are the ones we least expect.

So, as the curtain rises on 'Cheatin',' remember that every show, every cast, and every director has a unique story to tell. It's a story of growth, of challenges, and of the magic that happens when a group of talented individuals come together to create something special.
